Reddit polices health claims while drugmakers buy access to its users

In August 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, moderators of several large Reddit forums demanded that the platform crack down on what they called medical misinformation. CEO Steve Huffman initially refused, writing, “Dissent is a part of Reddit and the foundation of democracy.” Days later, Reddit quarantined 54 communities and banned r/NoNewNormal, a forum with more than 122,000 subscribers that challenged masking, vaccination and other pandemic policies.

Five years later, who decides what counts as health misinformation remains contested, and drugmakers are now paying to reach patients there.

Reddit’s health rules change from one forum to the next

Reddit’s sitewide rules apply everywhere, but volunteer moderators can add stricter ones. A vaccine post may stay up in one forum and vanish in another.

A preprint that has not been peer reviewed analyzed more than 133,000 posts from breast, lung, colon and prostate cancer communities. Two AI models both flagged 1,730 of them, about 1.3%, as misinformation, most often involving unproven or alternative treatments. The authors wrote that in such forums, “overly aggressive moderation may suppress legitimate health concerns, while insufficient moderation may allow misleading narratives to normalize.”

Reddit’s own AI tool has stumbled on medical questions, too. Futurism reported that it suggested kratom for chronic pain and said heroin is sometimes used in pain management before Reddit patched it.

Banned users say Reddit silenced legitimate debate

Curtis Matthew Sharkey, Ph.D., says Reddit permanently banned him in 2023 over a post arguing the virus most likely leaked from a lab. “The whole site became unusable — due to aggressive moderation — over the pandemic years,” he told The Defender. Journalist Joshua Walkos agreed, calling Reddit censorious on vaccine and medical freedom topics.

Government pressure is part of the backdrop. In October 2021, three Democratic senators urged Reddit to act against posts promoting ivermectin. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in 2024 to the House Judiciary Committee that Biden administration officials repeatedly pressured Facebook in 2021 to censor certain COVID-19 content, calling the pressure wrong, though he said the final decisions were Meta’s. Whether Reddit faced similar pressure is unproven. Writer Margaret Anna Alice told The Defender she thinks it highly likely, but without court discovery or whistleblowers it remains speculation.

Drugmakers court Reddit users while TV drug ad spending climbs

eMarketer reported that Novo Nordisk brought a Wegovy patient to an Ask Me Anything session and that Gilead used an unbranded account for an HIV prevention campaign. On Sept. 2, the U.K. Advertising Standards Authority ruled that a paid Reddit ad for the weight-loss service SheMed promoted prescription-only weight-loss drugs to the public and was likely to exploit body-image insecurities. Reddit was not accused of wrongdoing.

Drugmakers have spent $5.2 billion on TV ads since President Trump’s September 2025 memorandum on drug advertising, 8% more than in the same stretch a year earlier, according to iSpot data reported by NOTUS.

Kennedy’s pledge to ban drug ads has become a slow regulatory process

Two days before the 2024 election, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now the health secretary, wrote on X: “Let’s get President Trump back in the White House and me to DC so we can ban pharmaceutical advertising.” The FDA has since taken a slower route, listing a proposed rule that would end the option for TV and radio ads to point viewers elsewhere for safety information, which would make many spots far too long. The agency’s agenda targets December for the proposal, and a senior administration official told NOTUS it is a priority with no firm timeline.

Reddit presents itself as a home for open debate, yet its rules and moderators shape which health claims stay up while pharmaceutical marketing grows on the same site. The Defender found no public evidence that a drugmaker directed Reddit to suppress vaccine criticism, but Reddit hasn’t said whether drugmakers, medical groups or government agencies help shape its vaccine standards. Alice says readers can simply leave: “The free market is our court of justice, and people can cast their verdict by taking their presence elsewhere — and this is precisely as it should be.”
